Daniel Ricciardo scored his third podium finish in a row (and his second in Canada) with a superb drive to third place that saw him resist intense pressure from rivals behind on quicker tyres in the closing stages. Max Verstappen's race lasted just 10 laps however, with the Dutchman forced to retire from second place with an energy store problem.
When the lights went out at the start it was Max who reacted quickest. The Red Bull driver took an outside line towards Turn 1 and passed Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and slow-starting Sebastian Vettel as they went into the first corner. There was brief contact with Vettel that resulted in some damage to the Ferrari's front wing, but Max emerged unscathed to tuck in behind leader Lewis Hamilton as they headed towards Turn 3.
Daniel too was making moves, getting ahead of Raikkonen at the start to lie in fifth behind Vettel. When Vettel later pitted on lap five for running repairs and tyres, Daniel rose to fourth.

Behind them more damage was being done. Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean collided, resulting in the Toro Rosso driver pitching into a spin. He sailed backwards out through Turn 3 and slammed into Felipe Massa as he did so. Both were instantly ruled out, but Grosjean managed to continue after pitting for repairs and new tyres.
The incident brought out the safety car and on the re-start Bottas attempted to pass Verstappen around the outside into Turn 1. The Dutchman was alive to the threat, however, and fended off the attack well to hold second place, if only briefly.
As he went through the opening two corners on lap 11, Max's RB13 suddenly suffered a massive loss of power and he was forced to pull over just after the exit of Turn 2 and retire from the race.
The blow was softened by Daniel being able to pick up the pieces. The Australian rose to third place and set about consolidating the position. As Hamilton carved out a substantial lead ahead Daniel made his sole pit stop on lap 18, taking on soft tyres, looking at a long final stint.
That initially worked well as his lap times showed, but as the stint wore on it became clear that the soft tyres weren't behaving as expected, and as rivals pitted and began to lap faster on quicker supersoft tyres, it became apparent that Daniel would have a fight on his hands in the closing stages.
The first threat came from the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. Perez closed to within four tenths of a second behind Daniel but the Mexican could find no way past the Aussie's resolute defence.
Behind Perez, Ocon was lapping quicker than his team-mate and the Force India pit wall asked the Mexican to allow the Frenchman through to attack Daniel. Perez resisted however and they began to tussle amongst themselves. The only victor was Daniel who was able to build a 1.0s gap to Perez.
A greater threat was coming from further back through. Vettel had pitted for supersoft tyres on lap five and then made a second stop for the same compound from P7 on lap 49.
Armed with the fresh tyres, he was boosted to P6 when team-mate Raikkonen suffered a brake issue and went wide. He then closed in on the Force Indias, passing Ocon on lap 65 and Perez two laps later. Daniel now had 3.9s in hand over the Ferrari driver but he was lapping more slowly. The Australian had enough in reserve however, and he held on to third place by just over half a second.
