The great and the good from the wide world of sport descended upon London this week to celebrate the annual Laureus Sports Awards. Hosted by actor Clive Owen, the 2012 gong-giving ceremony saw some of the most successful sports stars of the past 12 months honoured for their achievements.
Among the shortlisted were a number of Red Bull-backed athletes, including the likes of Sebastian Vettel (up for World Sportsman of the Year), Red Bull (World Team of the Year) and Carissa Moore, Philip Koster and Travis Rice (World Action Sportsperson of the Year).
The awards ceremony, which are deliberated over by the Laureus World Sports Academy (a jury made up of 47 sportsmen and sportswomen – including Red Bull-backed windsurfer Robby Naish), saw US surfer Kelly Slater winning a record-equalling fourth Laureus Award and Northern Ireland golfers both Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy both being honoured. Serbia's Novak Djokovic was pronounced Laureus World Sportsman of the Year after winning three Grand Slam events in 2011 and Kenyan distance runner Vivian Cheruiyot (pictured above) was declared Laureus Sportswoman of the Year.
South Africa's Oscar Pistorius was presented with the Laureus Disability Award, after becoming the first amputee to win a track medal in the non-disabled World Championships.
