No stranger to controversy, the Bahrain Grand Prix has received the unfailing support of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone who remains determined to keep politics out of sport and bring top level motor sport to its growing audience in Asia.
In 2011, the ongoing civil unrest following the Day of Rage in Bahrain meant the staging of the race became untenable, and it was duly cancelled. There was much speculation as to whether it would return for the 2012 calendar, but the long awaited race weekend, which is loved by hundreds of thousands of racing fans from across the region, is back for its eighth outing.
Scheduled to take place between April 20th and 22nd, it will bethe fourth round of the record-breaking 20-race calendar that makes up this year's FIA Formula One World Championship. This year's race slogan will be, 'UNIF1ED - ONE NATION IN CELEBRATION'. The mantra reflecting the unifying spirit of true Formula One fans, who share a passion for the sport and who long to see the very best of motor racing take place in the Kingdom.
The GP is held at the stunning Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. Built at a cost of $150m, the BIC was designed by Hermann Tilke and opened in 2004 in time to stage the first Bahrain Grand Prix. As well as the characteristic long straight into a hairpin featured on the F1 circuit, Sakhir is designed to be versatile and can be laid out in six ways including as a drag racing track or test oval. One of the safest F1 tracks of all time, it covers 5.412 km with wide run-off areas.
With twice as many victories as an other constructor, it’s fair to say it’s a Ferrari circuit, while Fernando Alonso has swigged alcohol-free rosewater on the top step of the podium three times, his third win coming after a dodgy spark plug deprived race leader Sebastian Vettel of the win.
