Last year's MotoGP in Motegi was late after it fell foul of the massive air travel problems that much of Europe faced at the hands of the infamous Icelandic volcano eruption in April, and now, due to the tragic events in the race's own country of Japan caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the MotoGP of Japan has moved again in 2011 to a new date of October 2.
Built in 1997 by Honda, the Twin Ring Motegi takes its name from the fact that there are two race tracks at the facility; a 2.493km (1.549m) oval and a 4.8km (2.98m) road course. Both courses share garage and grandstand facilities, but are entirely separate otherwise. Based in the town of Motegi in the eastern Tochigi prefecture, the course is set on hills linked to the Hakko mountain chain and surrounded by forest. Unlike anywhere else in the world, the main idea behind the development of Twin Ring Motegi was coexistence with nature, aiming to keep the forest as untouched as possible and leave the water system in its natural state, while reviving and increasing woodlands. A 21st-century playground is also being constructed so that in the future children can play while learning from the plants and animals around them.
