Nine long months, 35 races, hundreds of thousands of supporters, buckets of blood, sweat and tears and it finally all boils down to this, the final race in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Florida is certainly no stranger to hosting end of season finales, with up to five major competitions concluding here each year. The speedway was originally constructed to help Homestead rebound after the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Initially, the racing at Homestead wasn't considered very good. The track opened as a four-turn, rectangular-oval, based on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's layout. But, due to its shorter distance, the track wasn't able to maintain the same racing characteristics. But in the summer of 1997, an $8.2 million reconfiguration project completely morphed the track into a traditional, continuous turn oval. 2003 saw further reconfiguration with steep banking added, and two years later lights were installed to allow night racing. Renovations have been roundly praised and the track has produced a number of epic finishes, making it the perfect season decider.
Originally known as "The Chase for the Championship" during its creation, and then "The Chase for the Nextel Cup" (from 2004 to 2007) it is the championship system used in NASCAR's top division, the Sprint Cup Series. The Chase was first announced on January 21, 2004, and first used during the 2004 Nextel Cup season. The format used from 2004 to 2006 was modified slightly for the 2007 season. The 10-race Chase pits the 12 drivers with the highest points from the Sprint Cup season against each other. The driver with the most points after the final 10 races is declared the champion.
