110 teams, 440 athletes , a 50km course covering 3,000 vertical metres, a race against the clock and against each other, over 4 hours of grueling competition in one of the toughest extreme sport relays on the planet. Sound intriguing? Then welcome to The Red Bull Dolomite Man 2010.
This marathon event, starting in Lienz, Austria is being held for the 23rd time and combines mountain running, paragliding, kayaking and mountain biking. To begin with the mountain-runners must cover 1700 metres in altitude track. They start in the main square of Lienz and then head to Dolomites, where they find themselves confronted by some seriously steep tracks. At a breath-taking altitude of over 2400 metres, they will then hand over to the paragliders who have the unenviable task of negotiating the Dolomites' peaks and a tricky landing, before another 500 meter run to the next take off station. When they have successfully descended through the skies into the town of Leisach, it is then the turn of the kayakers. There are two segments for them to overcome, firstly a tight 1000 metre slalom course against the raging current of the river Drau. Next up they face a quick downwater run to the final changeover and after all that downhill, downriver action there is a rollercoaster ride in store for the mountain bikers. From narrow woods and steep sections where they will need to shoulder their bikes, to blistering downhill runs, they'll need to be in peak physical fitness to reach the finish-line in Lienz first.
