What is the X-Alps?
Red Bull X-Alps is a biennial adventure race traversing the length of the European Alps from Austria to Monaco. Athletes use paragliders to fly where possible, or run carrying their paragliders if it is not possible. The race is continuous, 800–865 km (500–537 mi) long and the winner typically takes 12 to 16 days to complete the course.
The 2011 race begins in Salzburg, Austria on July 17, 2011 and finishes in Monaco. In between, the athletes must navigate past eight Alpine turnpoints in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France.
