One of the most noticeable differences to Max’s car for the 2022 season is the change to #1 and what did he say when asked why he changed his number… “It looks better than the number 33.”
Over the off-season it’s clear that Max has kept his feet on the ground and comes back this year knowing there’s a lot he needs to discover about the RB18. “In terms of the car, we don’t know what to fully expect so I’m excited to see how the car behaves on track for the first time. The biggest adaptation this season will be the new regulations, we’ll need some time to get used to the car, it is not like you just jump in and it’s an upgrade from last year,” explained Max.

So far Max hasn’t spent too much time in the simulator with the RB18, but he’s already spotted a few things he’ll have to adapt to. “The biggest thing for me is the view in the cockpit with these huge tyres blocking your view, it’s harder to hit an apex in the tight corners. The driving feels like it has a bit less grip, but you’ll get used to that. That’s why we have the pre-season tests.”
With so many unknowns heading into this season, Max is controlling what he can. “What’s important is I’ve prepared myself physically as well as possible, but in terms of the car, you don’t know. I’m very curious to see how the car behaves on track, I hope it’s quick” Max said, adding: “The thing I’m most looking forward to is getting to know the car, and that first moment when you drive out the pit lane and do your first few laps!”
