After taking a stunning pole position on Saturday, Max lined up at the front of the grid with high hopes of racing hard for a 65th career win. And at the start, Max got away well to take the lead.
However, as he roared into Turn 1, the Champion had a brief lock up that allowed Lando Norris to pull alongside as they went into following turn. The Champion stuck hard to the racing line and the McLaren driver had to go off track and he dropped back to sixth behind Williams’ Alex Albon.

Further back, VCARB’s Liam Lawson was hit by the Alpine of Jack Doohan and spun out of the race, the Virtual Safety Car was deployed. When the track went green again Max controlled the resumption well and held the lead. Second-placed Kimi Antonelli, though, was passed by the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri, while Lando powered past Alex to make his back into the top five and then, on lap seven, he powered past Mercedes’ George Russell.
At the front, Max was coming under pressure from Oscar and on lap 10 the Australian clawed his way into DRS range. The battle was fierce, with Oscar pushing hard through each DRS zone, but Max defended like a lion, braking late and held the McLaren at bay as the skies above the MIA darkened.
At the start of lap 14, however, Max could resist no more. Max forced Oscar wide on the approach to Turn 1, but Max out-braked himself, ran wide and Oscar was able to cut back underneath to take the lead.
The tussle between the leading pair allowed Lando to come back into the fight and after Oscar took the lead, Max was soon being harried by the second McLaren. Once again, Max went into defence mode. For three laps the pair diced and dived, but on lap 18, as he struggled for grip and brakes, Lando got the move done and Max dropped to third.
Behind the top three, Kimi held on to fourth place ahead of Mercedes team-mate George while the Williams pair of Alex and Carlos Sainz held sixth and seventh.

Mercedes brought Kimi in at the end of lap 25, attempting to undercut Max, but the youngster’s pit stop was slowed when he had to wait in his box to let William’s Carlos pass by and when the Team responded by bringing Max in at the end of the following tour the Mercedes delay meant the Dutchman rejoined well clear of the Italian.
But while he shook off one Mercedes, the other made a move. On lap 29 Haas’ Ollie Bearman slowed suddenly and as he pulled over at Turn 8 the VSC was deployed. Both McLarens took the opportunity to make their pit stops while the race was neutralised and so did George. With Max slowed by the VSC the Mercedes driver was able to save time in his stop and he emerged ahead of the Dutchman who dropped to fourth.
Further back, Yuki had a quiet race up until his first stop when he failed to slow enough as he entered the pit lane, and was handed a five-second penalty for speeding. However, with strong gaps around him, Yuki was able to hang on to tenth place after taking on hard tyres.
For the Bulls the race then went quiet, but as the race entered its final third, Max began to edge close to George and on lap 45 he was just 1.6s behind, but that was as close as he could get to the Mercedes man and in the end, Max crossed the line in P4, two seconds behind George. Further back, Yuki was lodged in 10th place, five seconds behind Carlos and five ahead of VCARB’s Isack Hadjar.
At the front, Lando closed in on Oscar in the closing stages, but the Australian was comfortably managing his pace, and he took his third win in a row with 4.6s in hand over his team-mate. Behind Max, fifth place went to Alex, with Kimi sixth ahead of the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Carlos was ninth and Yuki managed to eke out a 5.1s gap to Isack that kept him in 10th at the flag.
