Rich’s motorsport career began with gearboxes and after his engineering studies he joined Xtrac in 2001, initially as a design engineer working in British Touring Cars and DTM. A brief stint as a track support engineer in US racing in 2004 then led to Rich taking on responsibility for transmission design in WRC, LMP1 and LMP2, NASCAR and in Formula One.
After seven years at Xtrac, Rich moved across to F1 full time in 2008, joining Red Bull Racing as a Transmission Design Engineer with responsibility for the gearbox of 2009’s race-winning RB5. He continued in that role with the championship-winning RB6 and RB7 before he became the Team’s Customer Transmission engineer, acting as the main point of contact for the now defunct Caterham team. As the sport integrated energy recovery systems for the first time, Rich also took on the role of Customer KERS Support Engineer, with responsibility for the safe operation of the Team’s cars.
