Increasing The Speed Of Change With ExxonMobilNew wheel gun lubricant smooths the way towards perfect pit stops.
The Team’s pursuit of the perfect pit stop has taken another step forward thanks to a new lubricant developed as part of its technology partnership with ExxonMobil.
The Team already holds the , with a 1.82 second tyre change recorded during last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix, but since the start of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship the consistency and efficiency of its pace-setting pit stops has been boosted in part by the use of a new wheel gun lubricant developed in collaboration with ExxonMobil.
Thanks to its unique properties the new Mobil 1 lubricant produces high clamp loads and torque more consistently, leading to greater performance and increased efficiency. Mechanics operating the guns can now remove wheel nuts more quickly helping the team to continue to produce fast and consistent pit stop times.
The new lubricant’s effectiveness has been visible since the 2020 season got underway, with the Team performing five of the 10 fastest pit stops across the first three races, leading the way with a 1.95s stop for Max at the .
It’s not just efficiency that’s been boosted, though. ExxonMobil’s new lubricant also produces less residue, which can lead to deposits on goggles and gloves.
ExxonMobil Global Motorsports Technology Manager, David Tsurusaki, said: “The racetrack is the ultimate proving ground and improvements in the wheel gun oil will not only make pit stops more efficient, but it is also better for the mechanics who deal with the oil on a daily basis. We extended our commitment to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing at the start of the year and as part of that we wanted to continue to deliver performance enhancing technology, wherever we can. I’m glad that our new MobilTM Wheel Gun Lubricant will help to showcase our advanced, high-performance oil range and hope it delivers results on track.”

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal, Christian Horner, said: “It is exciting to see how our technology partnership with ExxonMobil continues to develop performance, even in the most surprising of places. This new wheel gun lubricant demonstrates our partnership’s focus on innovation, but importantly also underlines our joint commitment to improving the health and safety of the Team.”
The new lubricant further strengthens the performance elements of the ExxonMobil and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing partnership, which first began at the start of the 2017 Formula One season and is just one of several innovations that the wider relationship is producing.
